Gibraltar

PORT GUIDE

The Rock crouches over the sea like an ancient stone beast, looking Sphinx-like to Africa. Beneath the white cliffs of this natural fortress grows a profusion of palm, pine, and cypress. No fewer than 600 varieties of flowers thrive here, some not found anywhere else on Earth. Gibraltar's stunning setting is matched by its history - five countries have battled for 13 centuries to control the passage between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The result made for a cultural melting pot. Veiled Moroccan women in caftans and vacationing Englishmen and Spaniards stroll along the narrow, steep lanes. The locals revert to a liquid Spanish when talking among themselves. And visitors to a 15th-century cathedral pass through a blue-tiled courtyard, once part of a 13th-century mosque.

Helmeted bobbies, pillar-boxes and pubs make for a bit of Britain in the Mediterranean. Gibraltar is a fascinating place, from its caves and batteries to the Barbary apes gamboling on the slopes of the Rock.

Great Siege Tunnels & Upper Galleries

The Great Siege Tunnels and Upper Galleries in Gibraltar are a remarkable feat of military engineering. Carved into the Rock during the late 18th century, these tunnels played a crucial role in the defense against the Great Siege of 1779-1783. Visitors can explore the extensive network of tunnels, view cannons still in place, and enjoy stunning vistas of the surrounding area. Informative displays provide historical context, making it a fascinating visit for history enthusiasts.

Apes' Den

The Apes' Den in Gibraltar's Upper Rock Nature Reserve is a popular spot to observe Barbary macaques in their natural habitat. Visitors can watch these playful monkeys up close and learn about their behavior from interpretive signs. Remember to observe from a safe distance and avoid feeding them.

Interior of St. Michael's Cave in Gibraltar

ST. Michael's Cave

St. Michael's Cave is a stunning limestone cave in Gibraltar's Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Known for its dramatic stalactites and stalagmites, the cave features a main hall used as a concert venue due to its excellent acoustics. Atmospheric lighting enhances its natural beauty, making it a must-see geological wonder.

Getting Around in Gibraltar

Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, is relatively small, making it easy to navigate. The primary mode of transportation is by bus, with several routes covering key areas such as the city center, the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, and other attractions. Taxis are also widely available and offer set tour rates, which can be convenient for visiting multiple sites efficiently. Walking is a great option for exploring the town's compact center, and many popular sites, including Main Street, Casemates Square, and the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, are within a comfortable stroll. For a unique experience, consider taking the cable car to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar for stunning views and to see the famous Barbary macaques.

Getting Around in Marseille

  • To experience Marseille's nightlife, the Metro runs until 1 a.m. Night buses are an option, but they might be challenging for tourists and could pose safety concerns in certain areas. If your hotel is far or safety is a concern, consider taking a taxi back.
  • Taxi rides are best for airport transfers or late-night journeys, as city center traffic can lead to higher fares and longer travel times. An exception is a one-day trip beyond public transport reach without renting a car.
  • During spring and summer, exploring the city center and Vieux Port area on foot is recommended. It's a time-efficient way to move around if you're close to the center. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water on hot days.
  • Keep a printed city map handy in case your phone battery dies, despite the digital world we live in.
  • Marseille's city center is not very bike-friendly, though efforts are being made to add more bike paths. Cycling around beach areas like Plages du Prado can be enjoyable in summer. There's a bike rental scheme, but helmets are not provided.
  • Get the Marseille City Pass for unlimited trips on public transport, discounted museum entries, a ride on Le Petit Train (a tourist rail line), and more. Choose from 24, 48, or 72-hour cards with special rates for kids.
